Created to mark the 25th anniversary of Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Amélie, Hard Times for Dreamers is a celebration of one of cinema’s great dreamers — and of the optimism, imagination and quiet courage at the heart of the film.
The title comes from one of Amélie’s most memorable lines: “Les temps sont durs pour les rêveurs” — “Times are hard for dreamers.”
Those words become part of the artwork itself. Repeated across the background and layered behind Amélie’s portrait, the phrase moves between message, pattern and texture — sometimes immediately visible, sometimes disappearing into the image.
Under UV light, another dimension is revealed. The words re-emerge across the entire composition, passing over Amélie herself and transforming the piece after dark. What appears to be a bold, graphic portrait by day becomes something different under ultraviolet light — a second visual experience hidden within the same artwork.
The work reflects the spirit of Amélie: finding beauty in small things, seeing possibilities others overlook, and holding onto imagination in a world that doesn’t always make it easy.
