The familiar blonde curls, beauty spot and red lips remain unmistakably Marilyn, but the gun pointed directly out of the canvas completely changes the character of the image – replacing vulnerability with confrontation and giving the piece its deliberately provocative title.
A vivid blue background and tightly controlled palette of yellow, black, white, red and skin tones push the image towards classic comic-book and pop-art territory, while the exaggerated perspective of the gun gives the composition its impact.
