Live Forever takes Simon Emmett’s iconic photograph of Liam and Noel Gallagher and transforms the brothers into their skeletal counterparts – recognisable in stance and attitude, but with the familiar faces replaced by skulls.
The title plays directly with the contradiction at the heart of the piece. People are temporary; icons can become immortal. For a band whose music, imagery and attitude became embedded in British culture, Live Forever becomes both an unmistakable Oasis reference and a reflection on mortality, legacy and what remains after we are gone.
A restricted palette of black, white and tonal greys gives the figures an almost photographic quality, while the metallic gold background elevates the image beyond portraiture – part celebration, part memento mori.
Hand-cut, layered and spray-painted using Montana paints on a 61 × 76 cm deep-edge canvas, translating the original photographic image through individually cut stencil layers and the physical spray process.
