Toy Soldiers brings together Donald Trump, the familiar green army men and Buzz Lightyear from Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story to explore the uncomfortable distance between those who wage wars and those who are sent to fight them.
Trump dominates the composition, casually holding a soldier between his fingers as though moving a piece in a childhood game. Beneath him, the soldiers are small and vulnerable, while Buzz stands watching from the sidelines — turning the entire scene into a literal toy story.
The humour is deliberate, but so is the criticism. The work reflects a perception of Trump as a leader willing to use military power and escalate conflict while appearing detached from its human consequences. Here, the soldiers whose lives depend upon those decisions become toys in his hands.
The familiar childhood imagery creates the contradiction at the heart of the piece: war may look like a game when you’re powerful enough to play it, but the people on the ground are not toys.
